Let DB6 manage your audio loudness to stay compliant with broadcast standards and legislation at all times, without sacrificing audio quality.

DB6 handles up to three SD/HD/3G streams in a single rack space unit. It measures and adjusts audio formats, loudness and true-peak level automatically, at the same time logging stats for documentation and evaluation.

DB6 is an addition to our highly acclaimed DB family of processors that includes DB2DB4 and DB8.

DB processors have been used 24/7 at numerous world-leading broadcast stations for more than a decade and you can operate them from one constantly developing user interface.

One-Step Loudness Management

Quite simply, DB6 is a TV and Mobile TV transmission processor that is able to handle everything regarding loudness in one simple process: loudness metering at the input stage, up- and/or down conversion at any stage, loudness processing, on-line lip-sync delay, loudness metering at the output stage and logging of all relevant loudness statistics.

In short, it is an intelligent one-step loudness management solution that even keeps your audio at its finest, regardless of which platform you need to deliver to.

True Value

Density is key at many broadcast stations and of course in OB Vans. Therefore, DB6 is housed in a single rack space unit that allows you to process up to three SD/HD/3G streams simultaneously, making it one of the most compact and powerful solutions on the market.

Surely, density does not necessarily equal cost-effectiveness, but in this particular case, the cost per stream is highly competitive. With DB6, you get two 5.1 capable processing engines per SDI stream, each able of delivering to any platform and any codec; be it HDTV, Mobile TV, Digital Radio or Podcast using AAC, Dolby, Ogg Vorbis, Lossless or Linear.

Forever Compliant

DB6 is compliant with all major broadcast standards, and it comes fully loaded with presets tailored specifically with each of these standards in mind.

However, it is not just a matter of being compliant, it is also imperative to stay compliant.

We have taken part in many aspects of defining and developing these standards and remain dedicated to keeping our broadcast equipment up to date whenever a new revision is released.

One-Step Processing

DB6 is like having a Plug & Play solution to Loudness. It combines all your loudness related tasks into one simple, easy-to-operate process. Once it is set up, you can leave it alone to work its wonders, and while setting it up, you'll notice how flexible the unit is.

As the diagram shows, you can apply two LoudnessWizard algorithms to each SDI stream, but on top of that you can also add one or two LM6 Loudness Radar Meters on either side of the LoudnessWizard in order to measure loudness before as well as after any processing has happened.

Signal Flow

The LoudnessWizard™ algorithm takes care of loudness correction, up-conversion from stereo to surround formats and down-conversion from surround to stereo.

It doesn't matter if you know every detail of the inner workings of loudness standards - just apply LoudnessWizard™ and let it combine and chain together multiple processes on the fly.

aNorm™ Adaptive Loudness Normalization (optional) for DB6 is not just A new norm. It's THE new norm for loudness processing.

It's a new adaptive approach to loudness normalization, and it's easier to set up and use than any other loudness correction solution.

At the same time, it delivers stellar audio quality and keeps you safely within the boundaries of international loudness standards and legislation.

aNorm also introduces a whole new way of visualizing pre and post loudness processing: the beautiful Butterfly MeterTM shows you exactly what happens to the program and why.

Multi Platform Delivery

No matter the input format MONO, STEREO or 5.1 SURROUND, DB6 can deliver to both SDTV, HDTV and MOBILE platforms simultaneously. DB6 UpConverts and/or DownMixes any input format, and can deliver for multiple loudness targets in one go.

Redundancy & Reliability

DB6 Environment 1

It does not matter how well a transmission unit does its job, if it is not completely reliable. Being the last line of defense in a live scenario calls for ultimate redundancy and realiability.

We're serious about being fail-safe. Not only have we given you what you would expect - dual fans and dual fuses - we've also packed the DB6 with dual power inlets.  You are now virtually risk-free of losing power while on air.

We are aware that DB6 is inserted at a very critical point in your audio signal path and that it is an 'always on' type of unit that needs to deliver a non-stop performance years over years. Should the unlikely event happen that DB6 loses power, rest assured that your transmission will go on thanks to the Relay Bypass feature that passes your stream directly from input to output no matter what happens.

Further, if one of the power sources fail, you can be notified using GPIO or SNMP traps.

  • Dual Power - For Independent Power Sources
  • Dual Fuses - Double Up on Fuses
  • Dual Fans - Two Low Noise Quality Fans
  • Relay Bypass - Just in Case!

5 Versions: Multi 1, 2 & 3 SDI and AES (Bal and Unbal)

DB6 is available in 5 different versions: DB6 Multi with 1, 2 or 3 SDI streams and DB6 AES with balanced or unbalanced connectors.

Learn More About the Hardware

Working with 3 SDI Streams

3 SDI Streams

The flexibility of DB6 allows you to work with up to 3 SDI streams simultaneously.

That's six engines of LoudnessWizard (UpCon/DownMix, ALC, Lip Sync Delay and True-peak Limiting) plus six LM6 (Metering and Logging) engines - all of which is sitting in just a single, cost-effecitve rack space.

16 Channels of Audio Measuring and Processing

16 Channels Audio Processing

A DB6 Multi with two Transmission 3G cards is capable of processing, measuring and logging 16 audio channels.

Set up this way, your DB6 Multi will do its magic with 1 SDI stream containing 5.1+2 + 5.1+2 configurations.

In fact, by adding a third Transmission 3G card, you can use the same principle to process and measure no less than 24 audio channels simultaneously.

Trickle Down - Always Transmit 5.1 and Stereo

TrickleDown Chart

Since DB6 is able to run two LoudnessWizard algorithms, you can be sure to always transmit in 5.1 as well as stereo no matter what the input signal.

For example, if your DB6 detects a stereo signal, one LoudnessWizard algorithm will immediately upconvert the signal to 5.1, and conversely, if a 5.1 signal is detected, the other LoudnessWizard will downmix to stereo on the fly.

Whenever upconversion or downmix processing is enabled/disabled, it happens completely seamlessly and without artefacts.

At the output stage, you have 8 channels, which allows you to always transmit 5.1 + stereo at all times. Obviously, you also get log files for both the 5.1 and stereo side.

Now, if you add one or two Transmission 3G cards to a DB6 Multi, the same is true per SDI stream. For instance, if you have a fully loaded DB6 Multi, you can transmit 5.1 + stereo at all times - times three!

Pre and Post Measuring and Logging

Measure Log per/post

DB6 measures audio loudness at both the input stage and the output stage. Obviously, your audio will measure differently post processing and it is key to be able to monitor both.

What's just as important, though, is having log files that reflect both pre and post processing for documentation and evaluation. With DB6 you always get exactly that. You can always take a look back in time and see what was coming into DB6 and what was being broadcasted.

In action the process is surprisingly transparent. I tried it with a variety of material, some quite challenging and I would have been happy to transmit everything I heard. The new Butterfly meter gives an intuitive overview of the audio pre and post loudness normalisation. aNorm running on a DB6 is a well executed answer to a problem that is or will be faced by most broadcasters.

The Icon software certainly gives very flexible and comprehensive control over numerous parameters of the DB6, from basic status checking to changing and storing the processing preset settings. Once it had found the DB6, the Icon software was very easy to use and intuitive. (...) Indeed, the basis of the loudness standards is that the sound should not be 'pumped up', compressed to death, or otherwise messed with to the point of distortion, so for that - and the DB6’s physical implementation of them - we must be thankful.
